Really? I was led to believe you were fairly excited about it.

who isn't excited about halloween? i just never had the chance to celebrate it before nor get a costume for it
then i got older and never thought about doing something for it

[more like she never got him a costume nor was around for him to technically go out on his own, plus no friends... halloween spent watching horror film reruns by himself at home!]

no it's okay idk how to say "i had a crappy childhood" without getting the pity effect going and not saying anything usually makes people think i'm just making things up

but yeah i'm hoping to do some stuff this year after i find a costume

Well, for what it's worth, I promise not to pity you. I'm tempted to try to make it up to you a little, I'll admit, but it's not coming from a place of pity.

Empathy, maybe. But not pity.

He told me he's new to the city, and hasn't had time to really see much of anything. Is that the same for you, or have you lived here longer?

i'm trying to show him around as much as i can

What have you seen so far?

we went to the ocean and down the boardwalk also i've been showing him places to go eat around town
oh the petting zoo also it was one of my favorite days

All excellent choices. I'm partial to the zoo myself, but I like the big cats best — and they're not really up for petting.

i bet if you asked... the cubs are pretty domesticated aren't they?

I'd worry about whether it was the right thing for the cubs, instead of just the right thing for me.

When tigers pace in their habitats at the zoo, it's their way of coping with the stress of captivity. Even the finest enclosed area is still just that — an enclosed area. And don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of seeing them sheltered from dangers in the wild that would threaten them with extinction, but they're not pets, either, and shouldn't be. They're beautiful creatures evolved a certain way, but due to factors their evolution could never have anticipated, they've come to be in an environment that keeps them safe while still not precisely suiting them.

[Funny how when she writes it all out like that, she comes to recognize just how much she identifies with those big cats in their pens. Moreso than she lets on even to herself, sometimes.]

A cat, by the name of Bustopher Jones.

He's a sweetheart, but he's also, well...undeniably unique.

Super fluffy and unfortunately a little klutzy. Or possibly even more than "a little". I once saw him stretch, forget why he was stretching, get confused by this unexpected turn of events, and then fall over.

What about you, do you have pets? Cats, dogs, birds?

i have a dog his name's rufus
brown labrador
i guess i'm also part-owner of a super fluffy cat called etro and a smaller half-husky white pupper called tiny athena
